‘Tidepool 5’

Sold

These blown glass pieces were made using cane techniques that were first developed in 16th century Venice, which fuses together separate elements to form the wall of a vessel.

The imagery employed is inspired by the tide pools that dot the north Antrim coast where Scott’s studio is located. Various aquatic plants and mollusks can be seen through the watery shallows left at low tides, which has some correspondence in the depths of clear glass that case the patterned elements of the composition. It is more impressionistic than naturalistic, with the saturated transparent hues evoking rather than mimicking the life of the sea.

With this body of work, Scott Benefield won one of this year’s exhibition Highly Commended Makers prizes.
