Historically lace has always been associated with the most opulent of fabrics and jewellery but Theresa Kelly’s work explores a dialogue between lace and the raw earthiness of objects found in nature. Using patterns of lace juxtaposed with patterns in the natural world her work is characterised by the contrasting use of textures and design to create an abstract and expressive art form. Theresa notes “within nature everything is cyclical, nothing is static, and for a craft to be vibrant, dynamic and reach new audiences it must continue to change and grow as I continue to do with my own work.”

What interests her the most with lace making is the possibility within the discipline. She has scope to develop an express herself within the technique. Through exploration she is constantly pushing the boundaries of traditional lace techniques. This leads to continual questioning and transforming previous work, therein creating contemporary genres while always remaining grounded within the traditional techniques of Carrickmacross lace.

Her work rejoices in the stitch contrasting that stitch with line, pattern and texture found in the natural world leading to the more abstract approach. The conversation between Gossamer threads and the organic forms in nature invites the participant to investigate and to appreciate that lace is a relevant form of expression in the creative sphere.
