Materials: Sterling Silver and Niobium

Dimensions: 15cm x 15cm x 4cm

Window is a metal painting. It depicts a snapshot in time of looking out the window at the green fields in Northern Ireland. This piece combines sterling silver and niobium to give a piece of art that is unique and timeless.

Approaching silversmithing in a contemporary way has allowed me to redefine what a silver object can be. I enjoy challenging the boundaries of traditional techniques through function and design. Making work that can be viewed as a 3 dimensional painting excites me as the possibilities are

endless. The woven green square has a range of reactions from the making process through to how it is viewed by the audience. The array of vibrant colours given from niobium are mesmerising. They hold an iridescence that is indescribable as the light reflects and refracts off its surface.

In my eyes, this material was perfect to mimic the green fields of home. I see the green woven square as my interpretation of the landscape through colour. The square frame elevates this green square, allowing it to ‘float’ in the middle of the wider frame, like looking out of the window. I like the crisp contrast between the sterling silver and coloured niobium. The two materials work together to form one coherent piece.
