The tambour door, made using small strips of wood which are held together using a linen canvas, runs in a groove cut into the top and bottom panel of the carcass. The door itself has a flowing movement when opened and closed and the sound it makes in doing so adds a melody to the process.
To enhance the feeling of Rhythm, the door strips are made from Oak, fumed with a graduated effect to create a flow and added sense of movement. The top and base are made from walnut to contrast the fumed oak door. Through wedge tenons are used to construct the carcass, with oak wedges to provide a contrast to the walnut and follow the look of the door slats.
Finished with natural oil.

As a designer / craftsman of fine contemporary furniture, John Piekaar works mainly with private clients. Based in a County Down workshop, work is also undertaken in collaboration with architects and interior designers.
Inspiration is taken from the natural world or architectural details. Sometimes the smallest scraps of wood can inspire the next chest of drawers or hall table.
