‘Vessel With Teal And Orange Vertical Lines’ by Corinne Price.
This ceramic vessel is made with coloured porcelain using a combination of the Japanese techniques of nerikomi (hand building with patterned coloured clay), and neriage (wheel throwing with patterned coloured clay).
The lower section of the vessel has been thrown on the wheel, a rhythm mostly everyone in the world is familiar with. The wheel turns, the clay turns, the fingers touch, the hands pull up. This rhythmical, cyclical quality forms the basis for most of Price’s pieces, but in ‘Vessel With Teal And Orange Vertical Lines’ it is particularly visible because of the striated teal and white neriage.
Above the swirling base stands a tall, vertically striped nerikomi section. Again in teal and white – this time punctuated with straight orange lines that glow in the middle like flames – the rhythm changes. Reaching up and wavering like voices in a choir, the ribbons of colour create a contrasting and complementary visual harmony.
Price recommends listening to Steve Reich’s Music for 18 musicians for a new understanding of her work. The striated base, rings slowly ascending, finds musical parallel in Reich’s polyrhythmic textures, and the vertical lines describe his layered vocals and individual musicians. There is a continuity throughout – a wholeness expressed in the vessel as it is in the orchestra.
