Above life’s chaos

A Butterfly flaps its wings

Everything changes

Haiku poem (Anon)

My submission engages with the notion of chaos theory where a small activity in one location can precipitate an unforeseen reaction in another unrelated place.

The butterfly effect describes the concept that a flap of a butterfly’s wing can cause a typhoon far away.

All things are connected and as Newtons Law states “every action has an equal and opposite reaction”

My sculpture aims to engage with the notion of the butterfly held within a confined space, seemingly controlled, may be a metaphor for humans’ attempt to control the natural world with unforeseen consequences, as seen in weather and climatic changes.

Artist Bio

Eleanor Wheeler:

Eleanor studied ceramics and sculpture in Aberdeen and Cardiff, completing a PhD in architectural ceramics and public art at Northumbria University. Upon returning to Northern Ireland, she has specialized in making large-scale sculptures for public spaces, buildings, and gardens, including the Gasworks in Belfast, Market Square in Armagh, The Mater Hospital, Drumglass Park, and Stella Maris Homeless Hostel in Belfast.

In between commissions, Eleanor travels extensively, with journeys including cycling through the Himalayas from Srinagar to Shimla and along the Danube from its source in the Black Forest to the Black Sea. These journeys invariably generate ideas that inspire new work and nurture the artist’s lifelong fascination with animals and birds and their symbolic cultural significance across countries, transcending time and place.
