Telepathy

As form shapes and is shaped by emptiness, as mountains forged by fire and earth colliding, caverns caused by air, crags and gulleys carved by water: so we are shaped by our environment; our thoughts react and create reaction.

These pieces are inspired by the mountains in my hometown in north-east China. Here golden amber flashes after millions of years pressed in coal black earth. I have chosen Terracolor rustic gold glaze, the earthen colours transforming from metallic gold to black as amber entrapped in coal, and changed by heat and time.

Clay is one of the most significant compositional materials on earth – an ancient medium connecting us with the environment. These organic forms are hand-built with Ashraf Hanna Raku Clay to create a freedom of movement that reflects our telepathic communication with nature. Audiences will have their own personal reactions to each of these craftworks. Heart to heart, to engage and respond with individual emotion.

Artist Bio

Fang Zhao:

Since 2010, Fang Zhao’s practice as a ceramicist has sought to communicate international ideals through sculpture and functional pottery. Fang’s work is inspired by her own personal beliefs and Chinese background, with a particular interest in traditional Chinese mountain painting.

Fang uses organic mountain shapes as a metaphor to examine her own personal life experiences as she feels that clay enables her to maintain a balance and harmony. Her practice seeks to synthesise traditional and modern aesthetics in order to situate a conceptualisation of the relationship between culture and the natural world.
