Partisans

Not For Sale

The ‘Partisans’ are made from metal parts that had previous lives. These parts Cecilia has gathered over decades, not just for their lovely shapes but also for their copper based material. In doing so she avoided buying new metal in protest at the mining industry’s destructive impact on the environment.

The 4 pieces of Partisans are constructed, soldered and finally patinated to create colourful, playful characters. Some have moving parts, or a squishy one, or a curved base to create a rocking. Their design gives them a purposeful appearance, perhaps defending the environment.

Materials: copper, brass, patina.

Measurements: set of 4 objects, max. height 18cm and max. width 13cm.

Artist Bio

Cecilia Moore lives and works in Dublin, Ireland. In her work she uses  “raising“ an ancient silversmithing hammering technique to create hollow forms, adding various metal parts to these forms and finishes  with colourful patination to  make playful sculptural metal pieces.

Describing her practice, Cecilia says: ‘My art practice uses a slow meditative and ancient process of forming hollow vessels from metal called raising. It is physically demanding but it is this physical exertion and ritual between myself, the metal and hammer that is central to my work. Pieces are made in copper, sheet bronze and incorporating parts from vintage, unwanted metal household objects, giving them a new life. Designs come from ideas, forms  and misremembered  imagery kept since my childhood.  There are curved bases to create movement,  rattles from inside and colour from the traditional patination together gives an individual character and playfulness to each of these sculptural forms.’

Her work is exhibited internationally,  and  is in public and private collections, including the V&A Museum London,  National Museum of Ireland, the Ulster Museum and  the Irish State Collection.
