Artist Bio
Eddie J Doherty makes finely finished forms, contrasting functional aesthetic concepts and traditional work processes with contemporary designs. The core of Doherty’s work, both for exhibition and commission, is the integration of various approaches and techniques, aiming to subtly subvert traditional jewellery forms whilst respecting the ethos of the goldsmith.
After graduating from University of Ulster in 2000 Doherty worked for Dr Sarah McAleer as her workshop assistant at the contemporary jewellery gallery Gold-Digger 79 in Holywood, Co Down (2006-2008). In 2008, after participating in Craft NI’s Making It scheme, Doherty setup his own studio in the recently renovated Old School on Church Road in Holywood, further developing it with Arts Council NI CIIF funding in 2010 into a fully professional workshop. Since then, Doherty has built up a wide list of commission clients, successfully growing his business through creating unique pieces of jewellery, in an environment where the client can experience the craftsmanship behind their jewellery first hand.
Doherty’s work is held in the Arts Council NI permanent collection, the County Down Museums Collection as well as in the private collections of numerous clients.
