Martin Marks is a Northern Irish metalsmith /maker with a contemporary approach to traditional crafts. His work mainly focuses on patterns found within nature – he looks at how these can be used to capture movement and light within static metal objects. By taking organic patterns from his marbling prints and translating the detail into metalwork, he succeeds in highlighting these unique hidden patterns. Martin uses different forms of acid etchings to translate the pattern from paper to metal.

 

Materials and processes used: hand pierced and photo etched base metals: oxidised copper, brass and gilding metal.

Martin was inspired by Japanese craft such as traditional ink marbling (Suminagashi), paper cutting (Kirie) and Golden repair (Kintsugi, and he uses these techniques in a metalsmithing format to create highly decorative, delicate objects for the home.
