‘Explorations in Form’

£225 - £240

Materials: Wood (Maple, Cherry)

Dimensions: 4.5 x 19.5 x 12 cm

In a 1980’s December, when home visiting family, I discovered a bundle of figured Walnut veneers in a Dublin shop by accident. I was astounded at the idea that such thin leaves of highly figured wood could be the same, slice by slice, through a whole bundle – so I bought a number of bundles – all different sizes.

Back then, I knew nothing about how to use this material and began a search. Nobody I knew of in Dublin could guide me so I took them with me back to London and began learning about their uses and history.

I have been using and exploring these fine wood veneers ever since and still am impressed with the qualities and versatility of each wood type.

The work presented here for “Reaction” are the latest explorations of my reaction to wood veneers and also my response to the concept of “The Box”.

Integral to every final design is the selection of the best grained figures to enhance the light and fluid forms I strive for. Laminating a number of the chosen leaves, sparingly, either in the same wood or contrasting colours provides strength.
