Binding the traditional art of bronze and gold working with contemporary forms, this series of work was originally inspired by whimsical pots and vessels from across many ancient civilisations, which so often featured human elements in their decorations.

We began our exploration into bronze casting as an alternative metal to gold and silver. We sampled larger scale pieces and challenged ourselves to temporarily transition from precious jewellery pieces into one of a kind sculptural objects.

As a goldsmithing collaboration we are particularly intrigued by a contemporary exploration into ancient jewellery, and this continues to be the case when researching ancient bronze objects vessels and jars. This alternative ancient alloy also allowed us to experiment with colours of patina. Unlike gold, bronze will show obvious signs of aging when exposed to its environment which we have encouraged in order to achieve unpredictable coloured effects.

Hand setting a range of colourful cabochon gemstones led us to a curiosity in what these vessels could become. Highly decorated in gemstones and human like features they appear to develop their own personalities. Each vessel reflects the enjoyment we had in researching, designing and making each individual.

This collection was a freeing, expressive and yet technically challenging project which has developed our skills as makers and transferred into our goldsmithing practice.

Artist Bio

Martin Cameron’s childhood fascination with illustration and Laura Breen’s intrigue with archaeology and making, led them to cross paths whilst studying jewellery and silversmithing at the University of Ulster Belfast, graduating in 2014. During this time, Martin studied and crafted delicate silver wire sculptures inspired by the rugged Irish landscape. Laura explored large-scale silver and enamel jewellery, playing with the juxtaposition of unpredictable organic life found in geometric manmade structures. After university, Martin undertook further years of education and training courses at the Goldsmiths’ Centre, London, whilst working to commission from his studio in Co. Antrim. Laura backpacked through Australia, New Zealand, Fuji, Japan, and Southeast Asia, drawing creativity from new people and ways of life, igniting a passion for her own country’s unique culture and history. In 2018, their paths crossed once more and in conversation, Cameron & Breen became a contemporary goldsmithing collaboration between two friends, combining ideas, skills and techniques. They have since won awards from the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths and, in 2021, presented their ‘ancient treasure’ brooch to HRH Princess Anne. Cameron and Breen have exhibited with notable galleries including Gill Wing’s ‘Tales of the Subconscious’ and Diana Porter’s ‘Ring’ exhibitions.
