‘Adagio’ by Ursula McGivern.

 

McGivern’s vessels reflect the exhibition theme of rhythm through the graceful movement of Koi Carp swimming gently through water. She was inspired by the natural flow and calm repetition created by the fish as they glide in harmony with the ripples surrounding them. This sense of movement and balance creates a peaceful rhythm that is echoed throughout the ceramic piece.

 

The Raku firing process also plays an important role in expressing rhythm within her work. The unpredictable crackles, patterns, and smoky surface effects created during firing form unique flowing lines across the pot. These marks resemble the movement of water and add an organic rhythm to the surface. The combination of the Koi Carp imagery and the spontaneous textures produced by Raku creates a connection between nature, movement, and the ceramic process itself. Through both design and technique, her work captures a quiet, continuous rhythm inspired by water and life.

Artist Bio

Ursula McGivern graduated from St Mary’s University College, Belfast in 1978, where she specialised in ceramics.
She spent 25 years working as a graphic designer and teacher before co-founding Kildoag Pottery with her partner, Adrian Brothers, in 2010. Since then, she has exhibited widely across Ireland and the UK. Her work is held in many private collections. In 2023, Ursula
was awarded the Irish Ceramic Award at Sculpture in Context in Dublin, followed by the Zozimus Award in 2025.

At the core of her artistic practice is the ancient Japanese firing technique of Raku. Her work is characterised by simple, elegant forms, with a strong emphasis on achieving smooth surfaces that respond dynamically to the Raku process. She has a particular interest in using colour and surface pattern to create narrative elements across each piece.
